Mountaineering in Nepal

Along with the highest mountain in the world, Sagarmatha (Mt. Everest), Nepal has over 1310 snow peaks above 6000 meters stretching over 800kms. The great mountain range of Nepal, popularly known as Himalayas attracts thousands of climbers and tourist each year. Nepal also boasts of 8 out of 14 of the world’s 8000 meter peaks. Mountaineering has also become a prime tourism activity in Nepal with more than 600 expeditions a year. The Government of Nepal has opened some 326 peaks for climbing.
Climbing permit to scale the Nepal Himalayas is issued in all seasons by the Mountaineering Section of the Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation. Certain official documents are required to seek permission for climbing peaks. Around 121 peaks do not require liaison officer for expedition. Fees or ties depend upon the altitude of the peak starting at US $ 1000 for peaks below 6,051 meters and rising by US $ 500 for every 500 meters. There are also smaller peaks, known as trekking peaks which range from 5,587m to 6,654m in altitude, opened by Nepal Mountaineering Association (NMA).
Seasons
Mountaineering in Nepal can be done in all seasons, except for high altitude mountains (above 8000m). Generally the seasons are divided in four categories: Spring (March-May); Summer (June-August); Autumn (September-November); and Winter (December-February). The best seasons for mountaineering and expedition is during autumn and spring. The winter and summer seasons become a bit risky especially at high altitudes.
Major Peaks
Nepal is endowed with most of the major Himalayan peaks of the world. Nepal is also popular as paradise of mountain lover in the world. Some of the major peaks in Nepal is mentioned below:

Permission
The following documents have to be sent to MOTCA, Mountaineering Division when applying for a climbing permited:
*Application
*Endorsement of the national Alpine Club
*Short biographies of all the members of the expedition (with photograph and signature)
*Map and/or photograph of the mountain indicating climbing route and approach route map
Enlistment of the expedition’s name does not require any fee and it should not be paid before receiving the permit from the Ministry of Tourism. Permits to climb the trekking peaks oare issued by NMA on “First come First served” basis. It is necessary to appoint a government recognized trekking agency of Nepal as a local liaison for the expedition in Kathmandu. The trekking agency will look after all the requirements during the expedition.
Fee Structure
A royalty (climbing fee) ranging from US$ 1500 to US$ 10,000 (according to the altitude of the peak) and US$ 50,000 for Everest is charged by MOTCA for a group of seven persons. An additional US$ 20,000 is charged for the normal south east ridge route on Everest. An additional US$ 200 to US$ 1500 per person (US$ 10,000 per person for Everest) will be charged if the group exceeds seven people. The full amount of the royalty has to be paind within two months of thedate of issue of the permit, other wise it may be cancelled. The royalty must be paid directly to MOTCA by bank draft or bank transfer in convertible foreign currency only.
Fee structure as specified by NMA (for NMA trekking peaks):
Fee structure for Group A NMA peaks
Royalty for up to 7 members US$ 500
Royalty for each additional member up to 12 members US$ 100
Fee structure for Group B NMA peaks

Note: maximum number of members in a team is 12.
Garbage deposit for all 33 NMA Peaks
An amount of US$ 250 must be deposited to NMA as garbage deposit to get permit to all NMA peaks.
