Karnali Zone

Karnali is one of 14 zones of Nepal in the northwestern mountainous region. Karnali Zone of Nepal is the largest zone with 15% of total land mass. It lies in the northwest mountainous region of the country. This Zone is one of the most remote and ignored region of Nepal and is not yet well accessible by roads. There are airfields with connections to all four districts except Kalikot District, which is now connected by seasonal roadways up to Jumla. Karnali Zone includes with two National Parks: Shey Phoksundo (with Phoksundo Lake), famous for the snow leopard, is Nepal's largest Park with area of 3,555km² and Rara National Park, smallest of all with area of 106km² (with Rara Lake Pearl of Nepal, Nepal's largest lake 10.2km²).

Humla, Jumla, Dolpa, Kalikot and Mugu are remote Himalayan districts of Karnali zone in the mid western Region of Nepal. This region is connected with the socio-political history of Nepal as Nepali language which is originally called “Khas language” and “Khas civilization” was originated from this region. Of these Jumla was the powerful and rich Kingdom in the middle age. Dolpa, Jumla and Humla disticts lies in the north bordering the Tibet autonomous region of china while Mugu and Kalikot lies in the south. The Highest average temperature in the area is 33 degree Celsius and the lowest average is -o degree Celsius. Mugu Karnali, Dolphu Karnali, Gamgada, and Khatyad River are the most important rivers of these districts. These rivers are fed by the snow water from the Himalayas and due to that these Rivers have immense potential for electricity and irrigation. These districts are also rich with several beautiful lakes, pasture lands and beautiful valleys with rich flora and fauna. Topographical and climatic variation of these districts supports a variety of plants and animals. This region is also rich in medicinal plants and plants of other economic importance. Information on lakes and biodiversity of these districts is limited indicating needs of in-depth studies. These districts are also well known for various fruits including apples, high altitude walnut, peach and different vegetables including endemic upland rice which is not found anywhere in the world. Moreover, district is also home of endangered species like musk deer, snow leopards, bears, wolves, different antelopes, mountain goats, famous lophophorus, pheasants and kites.

Pictures will be displayed with proper light arrangement so that it could reflect its real beauty. There will be 109 pictures that cover all aspects of Karnali zone.

The outstanding natural resources, typical topographic features with countries’ largest and deepest lakes, snow capped mountain peaks, indigenous Buddhist and Hindu cultures and rich flora and fauna can provide significant resources for development of tourism. But lack of protection and poverty induced over exploitation endangered precious resources of this zone. Nepal has experienced that it is possible to support conservation and alleviate poverty by promoting sustainable environment friendly tourism.

Karnali could be accessed by air or by trek. Each day 2 to 3 flights operate from Nepalgunj and Surkhet.
